What is and isn’t covered by MSP and Pharmacare

What the B.C. Medical Services Plan (MSP) covers

  • Any medically required visit to a physician (e.g. family doctor) or specialist (e.g. surgeon, psychiatrist, ophthalmologist)
  • Maternity care provided by a doctor (physician)
  • Diagnostic services ordered by a doctor (physician), such as x-rays, blood tests and urine samples
  • Dental and oral surgery, if it is medically required to be performed in a hospital
  • Orthodontic services related to severe congenital abnormalities

What MSP doesn’t cover

  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Dental services
  • Eyeglasses and hearing aids
  • Annual physical checkups where there is no medical requirement
  • Psychological or counseling services
  • Medical exams that aren’t medically required, but are required for such things as life insurance, driver's license or immigration purposes
  • Routine eye exams for those 19-64 years of age
  • Registered specialist visits to physiotherapists, chiropractors, naturopaths, massage therapists, and podiatrists
