Civic smelling acrid and running really hot

I had left Salmon Arm earlier in the morning on my return trip to Victoria from Calgary. I had taken my Honda Civic to an auto repair shop there because it was smelling acrid and running really hot. They couldn't find anything wrong.
I was driving toward the Coquihalla and the car "blew." All the ignition lights came on and the engine "died" immediately. I called BCAA and a lovely young man arrived to tow my car. I believe his name was Terry. He advised me straight away what he thought the problem was with the car, because "he could smell it." He was totally right! He towed us to Canadian Tire in Kamloops and even gave me the name of another company in Kamloops if I thought I might need them. The story deteriorates terribly after that, but the tow truck driver was the brightest part of the day.
