BCTF Travel Insurance

BCTF is proud to announce a new, customized Travel Medical Insurance program available only to eligible and registered BCTF members under the BCTF Advantage Program. This new BCTF endorsed plan offers multi-trip travel insurance, the flexibility of daily trip extensions, and includes coverage for pet return and basic trip cancellation.

Why Travel Insurance?

The cost of emergency medical care outside British Columbia can be significant – on top of the added stress of enduring an emergency away from home. Plus, some individuals are surprised to learn that Health Insurance BC (formerly Medical Services Plan and PharmaCare) may cover as little as 10% of the medical expenses you may face when travelling.

BCTF Plan Summary

With annual rates starting as low as $63* you can enjoy comprehensive coverage for your travels. Here are just a few highlights of your new plan:

• Enjoy simple online purchasing for maximum convenience, shop by phone or visit a local BCAA office for personal service.
• Multiple trip length policies, with flexible “add on” days when you need them
• Toll-free emergency assistance 24 hours a day, every day and you choose the emergency medical provider
• $5,000,000 CAD in coverage for emergency excess hospital/medical treatment, anywhere in the world  
• Includes pre-existing conditions coverage for people under 60 years of age and in some cases for people up to 69 (those eligible for Plan A)
• $200,000 CAD coverage for pre-existing conditions available for purchase by people who do not qualify for Plan A
• Trip Cancellation coverage of $2,000 (with an option for more coverage if you need it) and $25,000 for Trip Interruption
• Transportation coverage for your travelling companion to return with you
• Evacuation in a non-medical emergency, from a remote location

*Completion of a Medical Health Questionnaire is required by all applicants between the ages of 60 and 69 to determine the rate category.

Eligibility

You are eligible for coverage if:

1. You have not reached the age of 70 years at the time of the effective date of the Policy; 
2. You are a Canadian Resident;
3. You are a BCTF member or employee, the spouse of a BCTF member or employee, or their dependant children 21 years of age or under (or up to 25 years of age if a full time student)
4. You are actively at work with you employer. If you are a retired teacher, you are not eligible to purchase this insurance;
5. You are named in the application/declaration;
6. The information provided by you at the time of the application/declaration is true and accurate;
7. You are not travelling against a physicians advice or you have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition

Please note that retired BCTF members are not currently eligible for the BCTF Travel Medical Insurance package. Retired BCTF members can purchase regular Travel Medical Insurance through BCAA. For more information on eligibility, please refer to the BCTF Advantage Policy Wording Booklet.

Important Enrollment Information

1. The BCTF travel insurance plan is available to eligible and registered BCTF members only, in both single and family plan formats. Family plans apply to up to 2 adults aged 59 years and under, and all unmarried dependent children 21 years and under living in same household. Also dependent children up to age 25 years if they are full-time students, mentally challenged or physically handicapped.
2. Completion of a Medical Health Questionnaire is required only for applicants between the ages of 60 and 69 to determine the rate category.
3. If the applicant (between the ages of 60 and 69) responds ‘No’ to all medical conditions and events listed on the medical health questionnaire, the ‘Plan A’ rate listed below applies. If ‘Yes’ is answered to any of the medical conditions and events the ‘Plan B’ rate applies.
