    Insuring Your Way of Life

Don’t Let Your Holiday Fun Go Up in Smoke

Many people use candles to add a touch of comfort and relaxation to any room, especially at this time of year. But without proper care and precaution candles can be a serious fire hazard. Every year in Canada, human error is responsible for starting a number of candle fires.

Some of the frequent mistakes people make include:

  • Leaving candles burning with no one in the room
  • Burning candles close to materials that can catch fire (e.g., curtains, party decorations, clothing)
  • Leaving burning candles within the reach of children or pets
  • Falling asleep or leaving the house with candles burning
  • Here are a few tips for keeping your home candle safe this season and all year long. Read Candle Safety Tips

‘Tis the season for celebrating ... responsibly

If you’re like most people, your December calendar is probably booked solid, circled with Christmas gatherings and New Year’s parties. And, while these socials offer excellent opportunities to catch up with old buddies - and meet new ones - seasonal celebrations can also lead to guests driving home impaired.

According to B.C. Collision Statistics, fatalities involving alcohol account for 28 per cent of all motor vehicle fatalities, killing an average of two people every week on B.C. roads.

If you’re a host, you want to make sure all your guests arrive home safely. That means taking measures to prevent them from driving after they’ve been drinking. Be prepared to call a cab for someone who’s been drinking and don’t take “no” for an answer. Also try to serve all drinks yourself so you can monitor your guests’ consumption, and serve lots of food so guests aren’t drinking on an empty stomach.

For more information on being a responsible host and impaired driving, visit the Canada Safety Council web site and read “Safety Tips for Party Hosts”. You can also visit the Traffic Safety Foundation (TSF) web site for more information on impaired driving and tips for designated drivers.
