Cold temperatures, strong winds and, in some places, snow can take a toll on your home. Here are a few quick and easy spring touchups that can help keep your home in tip top shape, minimize any future repairs and save you money.
- Eavestroughs and Downspouts: Clean debris, reattach loose sections, replace damaged sections, and make sure that the water flow discharges away from foundations.
- Roof: Conduct a visual inspection of your roof. If you see any debris, damaged or missing shingles, consult a qualified tradesperson to remove and repair.
- Windows and Doors: Caulk and reseal.
- Chimneys: Inspect the flashing around chimneys, skylights and roof valleys. Ensure water cannot enter the home.
- Furnace: Clean or replace filters if needed with your furnace, air-exchanger, kitchen exhaust hoods, and air conditioners.
- Hot Water Tank: Look for leaks and to see if pressure relief valve is working properly.
- Smoke Detectors: Test all smoke detectors, CO2 monitors and fire extinguishers. Replace batteries if needed. It's also a good idea to review your fire escape plan with your family.
- Pests: Check for pest infestations such as mice, termites and carpenter ants.
- Foundation Walls: Look for cracks, leaks or signs of moisture.
- Decks and Balconies: Repair or replace weak or broken railings and posts on your decks, balconies, or patios. Clean slippery moss and mildew on deck surfaces and walkways.
- Trees and Shrubs: Trim or remove nearby trees, shrubs or bushes that may pose a danger to your home.
- Electrical Appliances: Ensure they’re protected from power surges and lightning.
- Extension Cords: Replace any that are brittle, worn or damaged.
- Review Your Home Insurance Policy: Ensure that your coverage for home and personal belongings still meets your needs. Talk to your insurance agent about any changes you need to make.
