Our History

From a group of motoring enthusiasts to one of Canada's best employers.



The Victoria Automobile Club is founded when a group of motoring enthusiasts gather to enjoy their
hobby and help each other when their vehicles break down.


First printing of BCAA’s inaugural, comprehensive BC guidebook with detailed maps.


First Emergency Roadside Service that includes free towing.


An affiliation of 31 clubs across BC officially amalgamates under the name ‘BCAA’ and opens
the head office in Vancouver.


The first personal accident insurance policies go on sale to Members.


BCAA extends emergency roadside service to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In this same year,
BCAA affiliates with the brand new Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).


Launch of an automobile insurance plan that becomes the largest auto insurance underwriter
in BC until ICBC is established in 1974.


The first sales centre opens in Nelson, then four more locations in New Westminster,
Penticton, Prince George and Victoria.


Launch of the first club-owned emergency roadside service fleet in North America with 10 drivers.


Membership reaches 100,000.


The first home insurance policy is sold to a Member in Vancouver. This same year,
BCAA’s mobile vehicle inspection service (VIS) hits the road in the Metro Vancouver area.


Introduces the Approved Auto Repair Service (AARS) network of garages. AARS soon becomes
the prototype for this type of service across North America.


Installation of the first digital dispatch system in North America for emergency roadside service fleet.


BCAA becomes the fastest growing auto club in North America and the first CAA organization
to reach 500,000 Members.


BCAA becomes the first CAA/AAA club in North America to offer roadside assistance
services for cyclists.


Open the first BCAA Auto Service Centre in Kelowna, BC


Launch of  Evo Car Sharing – the only car sharing service with a fleet of 4-door,
hybrid cars, built for the BC lifestyle.


With legalized cannabis, BCAA launched a new awareness campaign around impaired driving
to keep all British Columbians safe on the road.
