Advice for road users
BEFORE you drive
Put the phone away
Turn off the ringer on your phone and put it away where you can’t see or hear it (i.e. glove compartment, purse, backpack, etc.).
Use distracted driving apps
Use the 'Do Not Disturb' feature on iOS and Android devices, or download a similar app to help you avoid using your phone while driving.
Plan your route
Set the GPS and/or review all maps and directions before driving and check traffic conditions ahead of time. If you need to change directions in your navigation, pull over at a safe place to do so.
Adjust your settings
Address vehicle systems like climate controls, seats, mirrors and sound systems before hitting the road.
Set passenger expectations
Ask passengers to avoid doing or saying anything that would take your focus off the road. Enlist a front passenger's help in changing navigation, climate control or music if required.
Secure loose objects
Stow and secure loose objects that can roll around in the vehicle to avoid being tempted to reach for them.
Prepare kids or pets
Secure and prepare children and/or pets with everything they need before driving. If they need your attention, find a safe place to pull over to care for them.
Eat or groom beforehand
If possible, eat meals/snacks and finish dressing and personal grooming before getting onto the road.
