With a passion for problem-solving and a commitment to teamwork, Brady shares what makes his role so rewarding and why BCAA is a place he’s proud to call home.

A day in the life of a BCAA Automotive Technician

For Brady, a typical day starts before the shop doors officially open.

“I get here early, grab a coffee and catch up with the team,” he says. “It’s great to work with people you get along with so well.”

Once the doors open, Brady focuses on scheduled appointments, handling routine maintenance and diagnostics. He explains that the shop runs like a well-oiled machine, with each technician tackling their specialty. On busier days, he addresses tow-ins, where vehicles requiring immediate attention are brought in.

There is a lot of variety in the day-to-day work, and that keeps it interesting,” he explains. “Before BCAA, I was used to only ever working on one type of vehicle, but here I feel like I’m constantly learning and faced with new challenges.

Brady works closely with a team that includes BCAA Senior Leaders, Service Advisors, fellow BCAA Auto Service Red Seal Automotive Technicians, Lube Technicians and Apprentices. He also plays a key role in mentoring more junior team members, helping them grow in their roles.

“We’ve got a great group here – everyone supports each other and pitches in when needed.”

The path to automotive at BCAA

Brady’s journey into the automotive industry began at a young age when he started helping his dad at their family-owned shop.

“I was about 10 or 11 when I started working with my dad,” he recalls. “It just came naturally to me.”

After completing a four-year apprenticeship program through the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Automotive program, Brady spent several years working at an automotive dealership. His path to BCAA came through a former manager, who encouraged him to apply.

“I didn’t even know BCAA had shops at the time, but the company values, benefits and work-life balance really sold me,” he explains. “It was everything I was looking for, and I haven’t looked back since.”

For Brady, the team culture and commitment to safety are what set BCAA apart from other workplaces.

We have a really good culture here. There’s a lot of joking with each other to keep morale high. Everyone’s part of it, and it makes a big difference.

BCAA’s focus on safety is another standout feature. From custom hearing protection to ensuring all safety concerns are addressed immediately, team member well-being has always remained the top priority.

“Anything safety-related gets taken care of right away,” Brady says.

Brady emphasises that one of the most rewarding aspects of working at BCAA is the opportunity to keep learning.

Every day, I’m learning something new. There are always challenges to solve and new technologies to work with – it keeps me on my toes.

Brady also expressed how he appreciates BCAA’s investment in training and development, especially as the industry evolves.

“I’ve already been contacted by our Senior Leaders for EV [Electric Vehicle] training, which is great because that’s where the future is heading. It’s exciting to see how BCAA is preparing us for what’s next.”

Memorable moments

The most memorable moments of Brady’s career involve helping BCAA Members during critical times and being the person that they can rely on when in a bind.

There’s nothing better than seeing a Member happy when we can fix their car on the same day, especially when they’re on a trip or holiday. Making that experience as pleasant as possible is honestly the best part of the job.

Brady recommends BCAA to anyone considering a career in the automotive trade.
