FAQs

Here are a few simple ways to help extend the life of your car battery:

Watch for corrosion. Car batteries contain sulfuric acid, and the regular heating and cooling that happens during driving can release hydrogen gas. When that gas mixes with dust or grime, corrosion can form around the battery terminals. If you spot any buildup and believe it could be affecting performance, reach out and we will test the battery and if necessary, provide appropriate service or replace the battery.

Know how old your battery is. Even a battery that’s otherwise in good shape can sometimes use a little extra help. Most batteries last between 3-5 years. Once it’s past the three-year mark, it’s important to keep an eye on its performance. A boost from a friend or neighbour can get you going, or, if you’re a BCAA Member, our Roadside Assistance team is just a call away.

Reduce strain in cold weather. When temperatures drop to -15°C or below, plugging in a block heater can make a big difference. It helps warm your engine oil and fluids, so your battery doesn’t have to work as hard to start your vehicle.

Still unsure? We’re here to help. One of our trained technicians can come to you, test your battery on the spot, and replace it if needed, so you can get back on the road with confidence. If you’re a BCAA Member you can save $95 on the price of a new battery.

Summer heat may be great for road trips, but it can be tough on your car’s battery. Batteries perform best at moderate temperatures, and prolonged heat can speed up internal wear, shortening battery life and increasing the risk of unexpected failure.

Learn how hot weather affects your battery and what you can do to protect it in our blog, Is your car battery ready for the summer heat?

Car batteries don’t always fail without warning. If you notice any of the signs below, it may be time to have your battery tested or replaced:

  • Your battery is 3–5 years old. Most car batteries last between three and five years, and extreme temperatures or infrequent driving can shorten their lifespan.
  • Lights or electronics aren’t working properly. Dim headlights, flickering interior lights, or electronics like the radio or heated seats behaving inconsistently can signal declining battery power.
  • Your engine starts slowly (or not at all). If your car takes longer than usual to start, or won’t start altogether, the battery is one of the first things to check.
  • You’ve needed frequent boosts. Boosts should be rare. If you’re relying on them often, your battery may be nearing the end of its life.
  • Your battery looks or smells unusual. Corrosion, swelling, cracks, or a sulfur (rotten egg) smell are clear signs something isn’t right.
