Insurance in BC is mandatory in some instances. Basic Car Insurance (known as ICBC Basic Autoplan) is required by law for any vehicle you plan to register and drive.
If you own a property, your lender may require proof of an adequate home insurance policy on that property. If you rent, insurance is not mandatory but a landlord can make it a requirement of your lease.

ICBC Basic Autoplan is the mandatory minimum car insurance required by law for every registered and driven vehicle in British Columbia. It provides $200,000 in third-party liability, basic accident benefits, underinsured motorist protection, basic vehicle damage coverage and more.
Most drivers in BC top up their basic car insurance with optional coverages from ICBC or private companies like BCAA. Optional coverages protect drivers and their vehicles from collisions, non-collision damage like vandalism, fire, storms and glass breakage, rental vehicle extensions and more.
BCAA can help you with both types of coverage.
Most standard policies cover internal water damage (e.g. burst pipes or a dishwasher leak), but damage from external water like heavy rain, snow or flood usually requires adding an optional coverage.
Travel Insurance, in addition to credit card coverage is highly encouraged. Credit card coverage often has strict limits on trip length, maximum payout caps, and exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions.
