How to Buy a Used RV
1/20/2026Unsure of what to look for when buying a used RV? We can help guide you to find your perfect vehicle match.
Make sure you needs are met
Before you even look at a RV, determine what your needs for a RV are. Consider the number of beds you need or if there are any specific amenities you need such as a bathroom, kitchen, or an awning. You may also want to consider the storage space needed for your needs.
Before you drive the RV
Outside the RV
When inspecting the outside of a RV, make sure to inspect the outside for any signs of water damage, especially on walls or the roof. While looking for water damage, look for the water pump and make sure it doesn’t leak. Additionally, make sure to look inspect the roof closely and check for any leaks, cracks or any DIY repairs. Also be wary of any delamination on the RV and look for bubbling or separation of materials in the siding. Take a peek underneath the RV and examine the frame and undercarriage for any rust or corrosion. Test any electrical items on the outside of the RV, whether that be the lights, outlets or the power converter.
Inside the RV
On the inside of the RV, check for any signs of water damage, whether that be on the roof, floor, or walls. Be sure to check all the entrances/exits to the RV work and seal properly. Look for excessive wear, in the high traffic areas and ensure all the cabinetry and furniture are in good condition. Test all the appliances in the RV such as the refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, AC unit, toilet, furnace, propane system, faucet and electrical outlets. Additionally, test the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for functionality.
Extra amenities
If the RV you are interested in has extra amenities, be sure to test them. Examples of extra amenities can include: Slide-outs, awnings, outdoor kitchens, solar power systems, washer and dryer units, heated floors and Wi-Fi boosters.
