Keep the chill out and the cozy in this fall

You can feel it in the air…autumn is moments away. As the leaves begin to fall and the nights are growing cooler, smart homeowners are preparing for what’s next. In BC, that could mean facing storms, powerful winds, heavy rainfall, cold snaps and flooding that put your home at risk. But there’s still time to beat the chill. Prepare your home and property now, so you can avoid the cost and hassle of repairs later and keep your home safe, warm and dry.

Block the window and door drafts

Add door sweeps, install weather stripping and caulk the heat-escaping gaps around windows and doors to keep out the chill.

If you don’t…cold air sneaks in, driving up energy bills and risking frozen pipes during a sudden snap.

If you do…your home stays warm and efficient, perfect for cozy nights inside.

Prep your heating and airflow systems

Replace your HVAC filters. Reverse your ceiling fans to push warm air down instead of up.

If you don't...dirty filters can cause your HVAC to shut/break down just when you’re indoors more often and need it most.

If you do...warm, fresh air circulates evenly through your home, keeping your family comfortable through the fall and winter chill.

Clean your roof and gutters

Clear leaves and debris off your roof and out of your gutters (Pro tip: hire a Tasker!) and check that your gutter is properly draining. Consider adding gutter guards to prevent clogs and ensure your home insurance policy has outdoor drain and surface water coverage added as a final line of defence.

If you don’t…storm water overflow can pool at your house foundation, causing nasty leaks and flooding.

If you do…rainwater flows smoothly away, giving you peace of mind no matter how stormy it gets. Read more about flood prevention and survival tips.

Protect the attic

Head all the way up to check on your attic insulation, ventilation, and look for any dreaded signs of leaks or seepage.

If you don't... a tiny leak can turn into mould or stained ceilings after one stormy weekend.

If you do...heat stays in, damp stays out and crucial pipes are protected, keeping your home cozy and secure.

Winterize your outdoor taps, patio furniture, and umbrellas

Block the water supply to your outdoor taps by turning off the main water shut-off valve – it’s usually in your basement, crawlspace, or near your water heater. Don’t forget to drain the line too!

If you don't...a frozen pipe can break and flood your yard or basement.

If you do...your outdoor stuff and space stays protected and ready for a fresh start in the spring. Read more on how to beat the freeze and prepare your pipes.

Review your safety features

Check your fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and power outlets. Do they need new batteries, a dusting or a reset?

If you don't...a faulty alarm, detector or power outlet could leave you unaware of a looming danger.

If you do...you can enjoy cozy movie nights knowing your home is fully protected.
