Tips for happy apartment living with your pet
5/23/2025Whether you live in a detached home, townhouse or condo, everyone should get to have furry best friends. But, if you’re thinking of sharing an apartment unit with a pet, there are a few extra things to think about before you bring home a new furry roommate.
Know and respect your building’s pet rules
Before you think about bringing home a pet, understand your building’s pet rules. You’ll find that strata rules and rental agreements often include specific guidelines on the size, breed and number of pets you are allowed. Some buildings may require written permission, pet damage deposits or proof of vaccinations. When you know the rules ahead of time, you’ll avoid conflicts and make sure your pet is welcome in their new home. See the BC government’s rules on Pets and Tenancy which includes the clause that pet damage deposits must be no more than half of one month's rent.
Create a cozy space just for your pet. In smaller spaces like studio apartments, your pet needs a dedicated area to feel safe and relaxed. Set up a cozy only-for-them corner that has their bed, toys and bowls, plus a few comfort items that smell like home. This helps lower their anxiety and gives them a calming sense of routine.
Train and socialize your pet
Apartment living means sharing walls, ceilings, hallways and elevators with neighbours – and that requires good manners from everyone around. Basic obedience training will go a long way towards keeping the peace in your building. Teach your dog to stay calm when you pass other people and dogs in the hallway or when you share the elevator. Make sure your dog gets regular outdoor time, even short walks and bathroom breaks throughout the day will make a big difference for their well-being. For cats, make sure they’re litter trained and feel safe in a carrier for any important outings, like a trip to the vet. Socialization is important, especially when your pet is young, so they grow up comfortable in busy environments.

Practice good pet etiquette in shared spaces
While our fur-babies feel like part of our families, not everyone in your building will be a pet lover. It’s important to be respectful in common areas. Always leash your dog when leaving your unit and keep them close in hallways and elevators. Clean up after your pet immediately and avoid letting them bark or whine excessively.
Do you have a high-energy pet? Give them extra exercise or interactive toys. These can help prevent boredom-related behaviours like barking, chewing and scratching.
Focus on health and safety
Apartment pets need the same level of healthcare as pet with backyards. Keep your pooch or kitty’s vaccinations and flea treatments up to date. This is especially important in shared buildings where they’re more likely to meet other animals. For an extra layer of protection and peace of mind, pet insurance is a good option.
